The Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake

The mayonnaise in this recipe is really just a simple substitute for the eggs and butter/shortening you’d usually put into a cake.  The CHOCOLATE MAYONNAISE CAKE is easily the quickest cake recipe ever.  My one and a half year old had the patience (and I had the stamina) to sit on my hip while I dumped all the ingredients into the bowl and then hit the button on my mixer.  It comes out super rich and moist, and its ingredients are things you probably already have ... Babies, Baseball & The Art of Patience

If Baseball has its Spring Training and the army has basic training, what exactly counts as baby training? There is some warning about all the spit-up, the poop and pee, and diapers. My fiancée Jenny and I took baby 101 classes through the hospital and with the help of a small doll, we found out how to change a diaper and swaddle. But there is so much more to being a parent that they just can't cover in those classes. Now sure, most of my ... More »

You Know Where You Can Go?

The greatest (and for this household, most timely) bedtime book ever written will be released in June.  Now you know. There’s one swearing enthusiast who already has this in her cart on Amazon…   More »

What’s In Her Bag?

“Lapina is a silly tricky fairy”. She likes to go out on the town, make appearances in super markets and cafes and do impromptu dance performances. Her favorite band is MC5 and her favorite color is “clear”. This amazing bag was a 3rd Birthday gift to Lapina from a stylist friend. It’s vintage, was made in Italy and consists of a bunch of tiny orange plastic beads woven together with orange thread. It’s so cool that sometimes I borrow it! Let’s see what’s inside: A tape measure in centimeters: ... More »

Happy Mother’s Day!! They Owe Us!

Well, our day is nearly upon us. Mothers unite! Finally we can sleep late and sip champagne bedside at 10 am. I mean, that's my plan. I also gave strict instructions that there was to be chocolate and flowers. No need for elaborate gifts, just treat me like the queen that I am, if for only a day. Right girls? We're pretty amazing, and as if we don't bend-over-backwards for these little nerds all day everyday, some of us have gone as far as to go under the needle ... More »

Twins Names Reveled!

First, I'd like to say I am in no way obsessed with Mariah Carey, but since "covering" her last trimester on Family Freakout! I thought we should bring the story full-circle now that she's given birth. The latest news from the Carey/Cannon camp is that each twin, one boy and one girl, have been given "M" names. Have you heard them yet? Mariah reveled the twins names via twitter yesterday. Brace yourself...the boy is the lucky recipient of Moroccan, and Monroe goes to the girl. Um, I'm gonna ... More »

Born in the U.S.A

Just when you thought America could not lose, Save the Children had to go and publish their annual report naming the best and worst places to be a mother. Naturally, we Americans think we're the sh*t, but when it comes to being a mother in the great U-S-of-A we come in 31st out of 43 developed countries. Actually, it's not surprising when cute Scandinavian countries (Norway, Iceland and Sweden were in the top 5) consider things like healthcare and education top priority. And most of their cafes ... Mother’s Day Tattoo Tribute! Submit Now!

Shortly after giving birth to each of my kids, I went and had their names tattooed on myself. Both names are encased in hearts and prominently displayed on my upper left arm. I did the same thing after my husband proposed to me. Before these, tattoos were purely aesthetic- pretty pictures that decorated my body. The names of my husband and our kids are my most meaningful images, worn like a pictures in a locket. In honor of Mother's Day Family Freakout! will be showcasing our readers permanent pride for their kids. ... More »

Portuguese Kale Soup

I'm sure that if vegetables could be trendy, kale would be on the cover of Vogue right now. Initially I thought that kale was used mainly in green juices at the health food store. Then I discovered kale chips. After paying $8 for a container I learned to make my own. I felt that I'd found something great. I sung the praises of kale to all my friends and posted about it on my blog. Then I began to see Kale popping up everywhere, and when ... More »
